Heavy Equipment
At Blackhawk Engineering, LLC, we provide CNC machining and contract manufacturing for heavy equipment and industrial applications. Our work includes large, multiple-sided and drivetrain-related components used in equipment for construction, mining, off-highway applications, railroad equipment and other heavy-duty industries
We have spent more than five decades building our manufacturing operation around production machining. Our experience includes working with large castings and machined components made from ductile and gray iron, steel, brass, bronze and aluminum. We work from customer drawings and specifications to determine the machining processes, equipment and inspection requirements needed for each part.
CNC Machining for Heavy Equipment and Industrial Applications
Heavy equipment components can vary considerably in size, shape and function. Some parts are large castings with multiple machined surfaces, while others are cylindrical components that require turning, boring, drilling or a combination of operations.
Our equipment includes horizontal machining centers, vertical lathes, horizontal lathes, vertical spindle lathes, vertical turn centers and mill/turn equipment. We also operate a Mazak Flexible Manufacturing System with six machining systems, a 38-pallet rail-guided vehicle system and 800 mm pallets.
Our machining capabilities include:
- Milling
- Turning
- Boring
- Drilling
- 5-axis machining
- Horizontal machining
- Vertical machining
- Mill/turn machining
- Production machining
- Contract manufacturing
- Light assembly
The equipment selected for a project depends on the part’s dimensions, features, material, quantity and production requirements. Large components may require one of our larger horizontal machining centers or vertical turning machines, while other parts may be better suited to a different machine configuration.
Heavy Equipment, Off-Highway and Railroad Manufacturing
Components for Heavy Equipment and Industrial Equipment
Our experience includes components used in heavy equipment, off-highway equipment and railroad applications. We also support construction and mining equipment manufacturers and customers working with large engines and heavy equipment.
The types of components we manufacture include:
- Suspension and powertrain components
- Cases, covers and housings
- Intake and exhaust manifolds
- Main bearing caps
- Thrust collars
- Counterweights
- Transmission components
- Drive pinions
- Sleeves
- Couplings
- Hubs
- Stub and idler shafts
- Brackets
These components can involve multiple machined surfaces, bores, holes, turned diameters and other features that need to work together within an assembly. Our production experience with drivetrain-type parts gives us a strong foundation for machining components where the relationship between several surfaces and features matters.
Large Part CNC Machining
Large components are a significant part of our manufacturing work. Our equipment includes 5-axis machining centers with capacity for parts up to 1,450 mm in diameter and 1,600 mm in height. We also have horizontal machining centers ranging from 400 mm to 800 mm.
Our turning equipment provides additional capacity for large cylindrical components. Certain vertical spindle lathes can accommodate turning diameters of approximately 39.37 or 43.3 inches, while our vertical turn centers provide capacity up to approximately 49.2 inches on certain machines.
We also have coordinate measuring machines capable of inspecting parts up to 2,000 mm by 3,300 mm by 1,500 mm. This gives us inspection options for the larger components that come through our facility.
Materials We Machine
Contract Manufacturing for Heavy Equipment
Heavy equipment and industrial components are manufactured from a range of materials and the material can influence both the machining process and the equipment selected for the job.
We work with materials including:
Ductile iron
Gray iron
Steel
Brass
Bronze
Aluminum
Our experience with iron castings is particularly relevant to large drivetrain and heavy equipment components. We also machine steel and other materials according to the requirements established for the part.
Material, part size, geometry, tolerances and production volume all factor into the manufacturing process. We review those requirements when determining how a component should be machined.
Production Machining for Heavy Industry
Our experience extends across several areas of heavy industry.
Heavy equipment manufacturers often require recurring production of the same component rather than a one-time machined part. Our manufacturing operation is built around production machining, with equipment and processes suited to repeat production.
Our Mazak Flexible Manufacturing System includes six machining systems, a 38-pallet rail-guided vehicle system and 800 mm pallets. We also have multiple horizontal machining centers, turning equipment and mill/turn equipment that provide different options for production work.
For applicable production programs, we also use robotic and automated material-handling systems. Our experience includes a Fanuc R-1000 robot integrated with a Doosan 9-axis dual-spindle lathe, a Doosan 400 mm horizontal mill, laser engraving and conveyor systems. We also have a Halter robot with a load assistant for applicable turning operations.
These systems can be useful for recurring production where consistent part handling and repeat machining are part of the manufacturing requirements.
Our quality system is registered to ISO 9001:2015. We use a formal Quality Operating System to address customer requirements and support ongoing improvements to our manufacturing processes.
Our inspection capabilities include product-specific gauging and coordinate measuring machines.
Our CMM equipment includes:
- Brown & Sharpe CMM with a 1,200 mm x 1,500 mm x 1,000 mm measuring range
- Sheffield RS-150 CMM with a 5-axis REVO head and a 1,200 mm x 2,000 mm x 1,000 mm measuring range
- DEA Scirocco CMM with a 2,000 mm x 1,300 mm x 1,000 mm measuring range
- Global Advantage CMM with a 2,000 mm x 1,300 mm x 1,000 mm measuring range
- Global Advantage CMM with a 2,000 mm x 3,300 mm x 1,500 mm measuring range
We also incorporate APQP industry standards and PPAP or Production Part Approval Process, when they apply to the customer and project.

Heavy Equipment, Off-Highway and Railroad Manufacturing
Our experience extends across several areas of heavy industry.
Our experience extends across several areas of heavy industry. We work with customers involved in heavy equipment, off-highway equipment and railroad applications, as well as construction, timber and mining.
Our capabilities are also used in agriculture, gas and oil and wind energy. Across these industries, many of the parts we manufacture share similar requirements: large castings, multiple machined surfaces, drivetrain-related components and production quantities that require a consistent manufacturing process.
Our history includes production machining of drivetrain castings and other large components. We began focusing on production machining in the 1990s and have continued to expand our equipment and manufacturing capabilities since then.
Contract Manufacturing for Heavy Equipment
Our experience extends across several areas of heavy industry.
As a contract manufacturer, we work from customer drawings, specifications and production requirements. A project may involve a single machined component or an ongoing production program involving multiple machining operations.
We can evaluate the part dimensions, material, features, tolerances, quantity and inspection requirements to determine the appropriate manufacturing approach. Depending on the component, that may involve horizontal machining, vertical machining, turning, boring, drilling, 5-axis machining or mill/turn operations.
Our combination of machining, production systems and inspection equipment allows us to support heavy equipment and industrial components through multiple stages of the manufacturing process within our facility.
